Located on the north shore of Tamarindo, Pangas Beach Club is one of the most recognizable wedding venues on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. It sits where the Tamarindo estuary meets the ocean — which means on one side you have the open Pacific, and on the other you have the calm estuary with its wildlife and mangroves. The beach here is quieter than the main stretch of Tamarindo, which gets busy. Up at the north end near Pangas, there are far fewer people. It’s a really pretty part of the beach. What makes Pangas different from most venues in Tamarindo is that you and your guests are on the sand for the whole event — ceremony and reception — but it’s a sectioned-off part of the beach. Random people don’t walk through your ceremony. You get the beach experience without the beach chaos. And you’re under the open sky the whole time. What sets Pangas Beach Club apart is its position where the estuary meets the Pacific Ocean. The result is a stunning natural setting — ocean views on one side, calm estuary waters on the other, and the beach in between. During sunset ceremonies, the sky turns vibrant oranges and pinks over the water. It photographs beautifully and it feels genuinely special to be there.

The north shore of Tamarindo is quieter than the main beach. At Pangas, the beach is sectioned off so your guests are on the sand without strangers walking through your ceremony. You get the beach experience — barefoot, open air, ocean in the background — without the public beach chaos.

The Matapalo Tree — The Heart of the Venue

If you’ve ever seen a photograph from a Pangas Beach Club wedding, you’ve seen the Matapalo tree. It’s the most iconic feature of the venue — a massive, ancient tree right on the property that serves as the natural altar for every ceremony. Couples get married in front of it, the reception tables are set around it, and the whole event happens in its shade and presence. It’s unlike anything else in Tamarindo.

From a photography standpoint, the Matapalo tree does something useful that most outdoor venues can’t offer — it filters the harsh afternoon sun during the ceremony. Guests aren’t squinting into direct light. The couple isn’t fighting midday glare. The dappled light through the canopy creates a softer, more even quality that photographs well even when the sun is high. By the time it starts dropping toward the horizon, the ceremony area is bathed in warm light with the estuary and ocean visible in the background.

The reception is set up right there beside the tree — tables on the sand, string lights overhead, the open sky above. Both the ceremony and the reception happen in the same open-air space. It’s a completely outdoor wedding from start to finish, which is part of what makes it feel so special.

Pangas Beach Club offers multiple ceremony and reception locations within the property. The ceremony always happens in front of the Matapalo tree — it’s the signature spot and there’s nowhere better on the property. The reception is set up right there beside it, with tables on the sand, string lights overhead, and the open sky above. Both the ceremony and reception are fully outdoors.

For green season weddings, Pangas has a covered upstairs space that works as a rain backup for the reception. It’s not part of the main wedding setup, but it’s there if the weather turns. There’s also air conditioning upstairs — handy if any guests need a break from the heat, though the wedding itself is outdoors. There are comfortable bathrooms on the property as well. Pangas is a fully outdoor venue and couples should know that going in — it’s not an air-conditioned ballroom, which is exactly why people love it.

World-Class Cuisine and Service

One of the standout features of Pangas is its food. The restaurant is genuinely well known in Tamarindo — not just as a wedding venue, but as one of the better dining spots on this part of the coast. Fresh seafood, farm-to-table ingredients, customized menus. Wedding couples can expect a dining experience that actually impresses their guests, not just a standard banquet plate.

The team at Pangas has a lot of experience with destination weddings. They work well with outside vendors — planners, photographers, officiants — and they know how to keep the day moving. For couples planning from abroad, that level of professionalism matters enormously.

Pangas works best for weddings of 50 or more guests. The space is large enough to hold plenty of ceremony chairs, full reception tables, and a dance floor — all on the sand around the Matapalo tree. Up to 150 guests can be accommodated for a full buyout. For smaller groups, Pangas also offers a semi-private format for up to 50 people.

The venue has plenty of room for a dance floor and a bar, and there’s space for guests who aren’t dancing to sit on lounge chairs with their feet in the sand. One practical note: the music curfew at Pangas is 10pm, which is standard for Tamarindo venues. Plan your timeline around that and you’ll be fine. Local Convenience with Luxury Appeal

Pangas is right in Tamarindo, which means all the accommodation options are nearby — hotels, boutique properties, and rental villas all within a short drive. Most couples rent a villa in Tamarindo or the Langosta area, which is 5 to 10 minutes from the venue by car. On the morning of the wedding, both partners can get ready at the same villa with their friends and family, and then everyone travels down together.

The proximity to town means guests can easily explore Tamarindo during the days around the wedding — restaurants, surf, activities, nightlife. It’s a good base for a destination wedding week. Ceremony Timing and Photography at Pangas

Ceremony start time at Pangas depends on the time of year. Sunset in Tamarindo ranges from around 5:15pm in November and December to as late as 6:05pm in June. For a larger wedding with many family formals, starting the ceremony around 4:30pm gives the most flexibility. For a smaller wedding with fewer family photographs, a 5:00pm start works well in months when sunset is closer to 6:00pm.

After the ceremony, family formals happen either in front of the Matapalo tree or right by the estuary on the sand — both are beautiful and very close to the ceremony spot, which makes things easy for guests with mobility issues. Then I take the couple down the beach toward the open ocean for their portrait session during golden hour. The estuary side is calm and reflective, the ocean side has more drama. Pangas gives you both in the same location.

The best months for a Pangas wedding are December through April during Costa Rica’s dry season. That said, Pangas works year-round — green season weddings can be beautiful here, and the upstairs covered space gives you a rain backup if you need it.
