Photographer’s Guide

Playa Langosta Wedding Photographer

Playa Langosta is about a mile south of Tamarindo, and it feels completely different. Fewer people, quieter beach, and some of the best sunsets in Guanacaste. I’ve been photographing weddings, elopements, and proposals here for years — it’s one of my favorite stretches of coast to work on.

The beach has several different entrances, a wooden bridge near Cala Luna, lava rocks, and tide pools that reflect the sky after sunset. There are four good wedding venues right on or just off the beach. And in Costa Rica, you don’t need a permit for a small ceremony without chairs — which means for elopements, you just find a spot and go.

About 5 minutes from Tamarindo by car, or a 20-minute walk along the beach. Most guests fly into Liberia International Airport, about an hour away.

Best for small weddings, intimate elopements, and engagement proposals where privacy matters.

Guanacaste has reliable dry weather from December through April. Outside that window, afternoons can bring clouds — which often makes for better sunset photographs. See my full Costa Rica weather guide for more.

What Makes Playa Langosta Different

I photograph on a lot of beaches near Tamarindo. Playa Langosta has a few specific things that set it apart — not as marketing language, but as practical differences that change what the photographs look like.

For Portraits

  • A wooden bridge near the Cala Luna entrance — I use it for first looks, couple portraits, and family groups
  • Lava rocks along the shore for a different backdrop than open sand
  • A long tree line that gives variety within a short walk
A groom in a light green suit smiles at the bride, who is facing him in a white dress with a veil. The setting appears to be outdoors with lush greenery in the background, capturing the romantic atmosphere of a wedding at Casa de Luz in Playa Langosta.

Is Playa Langosta Right for You?

Playa Langosta works really well for smaller weddings, elopements, and couples who want something more private than Tamarindo. If you have a large guest list or want the infrastructure of a full resort, somewhere like Papagayo or Hacienda Pinilla is probably a better fit. But if you want a real beach, fewer people, and venues where the whole property feels like yours — this is the right place.

These are photographs from real weddings and sessions at Playa Langosta — the beach, the venues, the tide pools, and the light at the end of the day. What a Wedding Day Looks Like at Playa Langosta

Most weddings at Playa Langosta start indoors. The couple gets ready at their venue — Casa de Luz, Cala Luna, or wherever they’re staying — and I’m there for the details, the getting ready moments, and the first look. If there’s a wooden bridge nearby I’ll use it for the first look or early portraits.

The Ceremony

Ceremonies at the venues usually happen in a shaded area on the property, close to the beach. For elopements we go straight to the sand. Either way the ceremony is finished before the best light arrives — which means we have time for portraits during golden hour and still make it to the reception before dark.

Portraits and Sunset

After the ceremony we head to the beach. The lava rocks, the tide pools, the open sand — we move through all of it depending on the tide and the light. The best photographs usually happen in the last 20 minutes before the sun drops. If the sky does something after sunset, we stay for it.

Wedding Venues on Playa Langosta

There are four venues I photograph regularly on Playa Langosta. Each one works a little differently — here’s what I actually notice about them when I’m there working. For a broader look at venues across all of Costa Rica, see my full Costa Rica wedding venues guide.

Sunset colors at beach reception at Casa de Luz in Tamarindo

Casa de Luz

A private beachfront villa where the whole property is yours for the wedding. The couple gets ready in the house itself — family members are hanging out in the kitchen or on the patio while it’s all happening. Those unscripted moments between people who love each other end up being some of the best photographs of the day. The ceremony area is shaded and sits on the sand just before the main beach. langosta beach club weddings

Langosta Beach Club

A beach club right on the sand. The ceremony happens at the water, guests move into the open-air restaurant for dinner, and portraits happen just steps away. Simple, clean flow with no complicated logistics — works best for smaller, more intimate weddings. Read my full guide to Langosta Beach Club →

Wedding Photography Cala Luna Hotel

Cala Luna Hotel

A boutique hotel on Playa Langosta — intimate, well-run, and close enough to Tamarindo that guests can walk to dinner. You can rent the whole property, which makes it feel personal rather than resort-like. The ceremony area and beach access are both really good. Read my full guide to Cala Luna →

trash the dress at occidental costa rica

Barcelo Occidental

A resort right next to the estuary on a genuinely good beach. If guests want to leave the resort and explore Tamarindo or Langosta, it’s easy to do. Not all resorts are in spots like that. The beach there is genuinely good, and the location next to the estuary means guests who surf will be happy too. Read my full guide to Barcelo →

A Few Things Worth Knowing

  • Playa Langosta gets steep at high tide and parts of the beach disappear — check the tide chart before setting a ceremony time
  • You don’t need a permit for a small beach ceremony without chairs or structures — for elopements and small groups we just find a good spot and go
  • Most guests fly into Liberia International Airport about an hour away — the beach is about 5 minutes from Tamarindo by car
  • December through April is the dry season and the most reliable for outdoor weddings — see my full Costa Rica weather guide for more on timing
  • For a legally recognized marriage in Costa Rica, take a look at my complete planning guide — it covers requirements, documents, and what to expect.
  • If you’re also considering Tamarindo itself, Pangas Beach Club is just north of the estuary with a completely different vibe.

Lyndsey and Jason

When Lindsey and Jason contacted me about their symbolic micro-wedding in Costa Rica, they were planning to stay at an Airbnb in Tamarindo. I recommended nearby Playa Langosta for their ceremony – it’s a quieter beach that’s perfect for intimate weddings, especially in the early morning hours. I knew if we got there early enough…

PLANNING RESOURCES

Everything you need to plan a wedding at Playa Langosta — legal requirements, timing, venue comparisons, and what to expect when you get here.

Elopements at Playa Langosta

For smaller elopements, Playa Langosta is one of my first recommendations for couples staying in Tamarindo. It has a lot fewer people than Tamarindo Beach, so you can find a spot that feels genuinely private without much planning.

In Costa Rica you don’t need a permit for a beach ceremony as long as you’re not setting up chairs or structures. For an elopement we find a part of the beach without many people around, do the ceremony right at the water, and then walk the beach for portraits ending at sunset. Being right next to the water is a completely different experience from a venue ceremony in a shaded area — it’s more immediate, more connected to where you are. If you’re thinking about a small or micro wedding in Costa Rica, this is worth considering seriously.

I enter from the Cala Luna side to use the wooden bridge, then we work down the beach from there. Within a short walk you get the bridge, the tree line, the lava rocks, and the tide pools. You don’t need to go far to get a lot of variety.

Proposals at Playa Langosta

Playa Langosta is one of my go-to spots for engagement proposals in Costa Rica. The beach has fewer people than Tamarindo, which matters when the whole point is a private moment. The sunsets are reliable and the tree canopy near the beach gives good shelter for a picnic setup if that’s part of the plan.

For proposals I use the entrances further north or south down the beach — away from the main venue areas — so there’s less foot traffic. A lot of couples who propose here end up getting married in Costa Rica too. Take a look at Dipika and Jas’s proposal at Playa Langosta to see how one of these sessions actually works.

Questions About Playa Langosta Weddings

About a 5-minute drive or a 20-minute walk along the beach. It’s close enough that guests can go back and forth easily, but it feels like a different place — quieter beach, a lot less foot traffic. Most couples and their guests fly into Liberia International Airport, which is about an hour away.

At a venue like Casa de Luz or Cala Luna, the ceremony usually happens in a shaded area on the venue property with the beach nearby for portraits. On the open beach for an elopement, you’re right at the water. It feels completely different — more immediate, more connected to where you are. Both work really well. It just depends on your guest count and what kind of day you want.

It depends on the venue. Casa de Luz works best for smaller weddings up to about 80 guests. Barcelo can handle larger groups. Langosta Beach Club and Cala Luna are both better for more intimate celebrations. If you have more than 80 guests, take a look at my full Costa Rica wedding venues guide — there are some great options further north in Guanacaste that work well for larger groups.

Not for a small ceremony without chairs or structures. In Costa Rica you can stand on a public beach and do a ceremony without any permit. If you’re setting up chairs or an arch, that’s when you need to coordinate with a venue. For small groups and elopements, we just find a good spot and go.

December through April is the dry season in Guanacaste and the most reliable for outdoor weddings. That said, I’ve shot some of my best sunset photographs during the rainy season. The clouds build during the day and then the sky goes completely orange or purple at the end. The tide pools reflect all of that light back. If you’re flexible on timing, November and May can be really good months.

Yes — and that’s actually how most weddings at Playa Langosta work. The ceremony happens at the venue in a shaded area, and then we head to the beach for portraits. The lava rocks, the tide pools, and the open sand are all a short walk from any of the venues here. We time it so we’re on the beach when the light is good, usually in the last hour before sunset.
