I lived in Manuel Antonio for 20 years. This is one of those beaches that most tourists never find, and that’s exactly what makes it worth the effort.
The Manuel Antonio beaches are world-renowned as prime tourist destinations. Whether inside the national park or on the public access beach just outside the park, the beaches are downright gorgeous.
They have beautiful white sand, small groves of palm trees for shade, and even interesting rock formations to climb on for the kids.
What they don’t have is privacy.
Tourists flock to Manuel Antonio’s shores all year round to enjoy these gorgeous beaches. And while having other people around isn’t bad, sometimes you want a little more peace when you visit the beach.
If you want a beach that feels like it’s yours for the day, Playa La Macha is worth the effort to get there.

Where Is Playa La Macha?
Playa La Macha is tucked in a little cove between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. There is no direct road access to the beach, which is what makes it so secluded.
This might not sound like a long hike to an experienced hiker, but trust me when I say it’s not for the faint of heart!
Only a handful of villas are close enough for the inhabitants to trek down to the beach easily. Everybody else who wants to visit will have to enjoy about a 40-minute hike to get there.
How to Get to Playa La Macha?
In days past, you had to find a local who would take you to the beach. Now, it is reasonably simple to find it by yourself. The entrance to the trailhead is near the Bongo Hotel on the old road to get up to Manuel Antonio. You can find the spot on Google maps.
There’s a small parking area there where you can leave your car.
Then, follow the signs that will take you to this gorgeous spot, as yet untouched by human development.
The beach is also accessible along the Ruta Mae, a coastal hike that begins near the Pez Vela marina and ends at Manuel Antonio beach. If you want to make a full day of it, that’s the way to do it.
This is a challenging hike that follows the Pacific coast. The trail is part of the Ruta Mae route — well maintained through the trees for most of the way, and genuinely nice to walk. The last section down to the beach is where things change depending on the season. Rain can wash out the trail, and the route shifts over time. The last time I went down, part of the trail had been washed away and there was a handline going straight down to the beach. It’s not scrambling — it’s still a real trail — but come prepared and don’t expect the same conditions every time.
It’s the kind of place that feels quiet and a little hidden, which is why a lot of people end up choosing spots like this for something more personal.

What to Expect About Playa La Macha
Playa La Macha is a small beach tucked into a cove. When you come out of the jungle and see it for the first time, the lava rocks sticking out of the sand are the first thing you notice — unusual and really picturesque. There’s a small island on the side with palm trees that looks beautiful from the beach. Low tide is the best time to go. The waves are gentle compared to the main beach, which makes it good for swimming, and the rocks make for good snorkeling too.
Often when you visit this beach, you’ll be the only person there. However, some people seek out this private beach for this very reason. Thus, they may be enjoying the sun’s rays in nothing but their birthday suit.
There are no amenities. No bathrooms, no showers, no food vendors, no chairs to rent. Bring everything you need — water especially. The hike back is uphill and the heat can catch people off guard.
Don’t forget to pick up all your trash and personal belongings when you leave. As always, you should leave nothing but footprints behind on this gorgeous little piece of paradise.
Spend the Day at Playa La Macha
If you make it down there, you won’t regret it. It’s a small beach but one of the best in the Manuel Antonio area. Bring water, bring food, and give yourself enough time to make the hike back before dark.
