Why Playa Grande in Guanacaste, Costa Rica Is Perfect for Destination Weddings

A couple holding hands walks along Playa Grande at sunset, their silhouettes and reflections glowing on the wet sand—a romantic scene perfect for weddings, framed by vibrant colors across the sky.

Every time I chat with wedding couples who have been to Playa Grande, their eyes light up. It’s just a stone’s throw from buzzing Tamarindo, but so much more laid back and less touristy.

This beach town is for couples wanting something special.

Your destination wedding in Playa Grande, Costa Rica will feel worlds away from over crowded tourist towns.

Ready to learn why Playa Grande might be your perfect wedding spot for you and your guests? Let’s explore what makes this place so magical for couples who want real, beautiful moments on their big day.

Playa Grande | Laid back Vibe, what Tamarindo was like thirty years ago.

Tamarindo is very lively and crowded. Which is a good place to be near, but not always a great place to be right in the center of.  Playa Grande in contrast is laid-back and intimate.

Playa Grande is a super long surfer’s beach.  If you are learning how to surf, the north end of the beach has smaller waves and is a good place for lessons.  If you are not into surfing there are plenty of cool restaurants, bars and cafe’s.  The best thing about Playa Grande is the sunset.  It’s such a cool time to be on the beach, there is always a great mix of people enjoying the last rays of the day.

Your guests get the best of both places too. They can go bar hopping in Tamarindo at night, then wake up to peaceful sunrise walks on your wedding beach.

The Natural Wonder: Leatherback Turtles & Protected Beauty

Here’s what makes Playa Grande truly special. You’re getting married next to one of the most important turtle nesting beaches in the Pacific Parque Nacional Las Baulas.

The endangered leatherback turtles choose this beach from October to March. Las Baulas National Marine Park protects this whole area. Your wedding venue is next to a beach that is protected by law from development.

The leatherback turtle nesting Playa Grande season adds extra magic to winter weddings. Just remember to follow park rules and use red-filtered lights only.

Intimate & Flexible Venue Options

Forget huge resort ballrooms. Playa Grande weddings happen in vacation homes, beachfront villas, and boutique hotels.

Rent a big vacation home for small weddings. Bring your people and say “I do” barefoot on the sand. Villa Las Velas Blancas hosts beautiful ceremonies right on the beach.

ONDA and RipJack Inn do boutique hotel buyouts too. Your whole wedding party gets the place to yourselves.

A wedding at a Villa en Playa Grande looks like this reception by the pool under string lights,  dancing until midnight with waves crashing nearby. Pure magic without the resort crowds.

The flexibility here lets your personality shine through. No cookie-cutter ceremonies. Just you, your love, and this incredible beach.

Practical Perks & Logistics That Actually Matter

Close to Tamarindo, but quiet: Your guests get the best of both places. Party options nearby, peace for your ceremony.

Easy airport access from LIR: Under 90 minutes from Liberia airport. No crazy mountain drives or tiny planes needed.

Local vendor network that knows the area: Wedding planners, Hair and Make Up Artists, and florists all live in the area and understand Playa Grande’s rhythm. We know tide schedules, best ceremony times, and backup plans for rain.

A Wedding Photographer’s Take: Why I Always Recommend Playa Grande

This beach is definitely one of my top beaches in the Tamarindo area.  When I have friends come to visit and they say they might stay in Tamarindo, I ask them what they are looking for.  They say, cool beach, cool bars and restaurants, laid back beach vibe, and I always say, I think what you are looking for is in Playa Grande….

Sunsets in Playa Grande are amazing. When there are clouds, the whole sky turns a dark orange and purple.

Less foot traffic means more creative freedom. For engagement sessions or trash the dress sessions in the early morning you can have a whole section of beach to yourselves.

Something about this place strips away wedding stress. We can capture raw, beautiful moments because people feel genuinely happy and peaceful.Your wedding album will show real joy, not forced smiles.

FAQs About Weddings in Playa Grande, Costa Rica

01.
Is Playa Grande better than Tamarindo for weddings?

If you want something more private and laid-back – then yest! Tamarindo is fun but can feel crowded and touristy. Playa Grande is just across the estuary, so you still get the convenience of Tamarindo without the noise.

02.
What’s the best time of year for a Playa Grande wedding?

December through April is the dry season, which means plenty of sunshine and golden sunsets. May to August can be a little greener and quieter, and some couples love the softer light and fewer tourists.

03.
Can we legally get married in Costa Rica?

Yes, you can get legally married in Costa Rica! Costa Rica recognizes civil ceremonies performed by a lawyer. You’ll need to provide some documents ahead of time, and most couples work with a local planner to handle the legal side. Some couples also do the paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony on the beach.

04.
How many guests can we host at a Playa Grande wedding?

It depends on the venue. Large vacation rentals can host 20–40 people comfortably, while boutique hotels like RipJack Inn or ONDA can be rented out for bigger groups. For very large weddings, some couples and their guets stay in a bunch of different vacation rentals in Playa Grande.

05.
Is it possible to see turtles during our wedding week?

Maybe! Playa Grande is part of Las Baulas National Marine Park, which protects nesting leatherback turtles. Nesting season is usually October to March, but turtle tours are strictly regulated at night. It’s magical to know they could be close by during your wedding.

06.
How easy is it for guests to get to Playa Grande?

Very easy. Liberia International Airport (LIR) is about an hour and a half away, and Tamarindo’s smaller airport is just across the estuary. Playa Grande feels tucked away, but it’s still accessible for travelers flying in.

07.
Can we have a wedding right on the beach in Playa Grande?

Yes, though you need to be mindful of park rules and tides. Many couples choose to do the ceremony directly on the sand and then celebrate at a villa or boutique hotel just steps away.

08.
What does a Playa Grande destination wedding usually cost?

Budgets vary a lot. A small elopement with a vacation rental can be quite affordable, while larger weddings with catering, rentals, and full décor can run higher. Playa Grande tends to be less expensive than Tamarindo or Manuel Antonio, especially if you rent a villa and keep things simple.

09.
Is there nightlife nearby for our guests?

Playa Grande itself has a couple great bars and restaurants, and even a brewery! But Tamarindo is just a short drive (or boat taxi) away if your guests want restaurants, bars, or live music. It’s the best of both worlds.

10.
Do we need a wedding planner for Playa Grande?

You don’t have to, but most couples find it very helpful. Local planners know the venues, vendors, and park regulations. They can also coordinate guest shuttles, caterers, and all the small details. I can recommend some great planners for your wedding.

11.
What makes Playa Grande special compared to other Costa Rica beaches?

It’s the mix of untouched nature, soft sand, incredible sunsets, and the chance of being near nesting turtles. Plus, it feels intimate without being isolated—you can slip into Tamarindo for fun but return to the peace of Playa Grande.

12.
Is Playa Ventana the same thing as Playa Grande

The very north part of Playa Grande, after the big rock is called Playa Ventana. There is a reef there and there are normally not big waves, so it is a great place to swim. Also, because of the direction it faces, the morning and afternoon light hit totally different here, so it feels like a different beach.
