La Fortuna Waterfall is a 230-foot waterfall about 10 minutes from La Fortuna town, inside a public park. It’s one of the most dramatic proposal and session spots in Costa Rica — the waterfall is genuinely impressive, the jungle around it is dense and green, and because it’s a public park with no resort required, it’s accessible to anyone. I’ve photographed proposals and couple sessions here more times than anywhere else in the La Fortuna area.

I’ve worked at a lot of waterfalls in Costa Rica. La Fortuna is the one I recommend most for proposals and couple sessions. The scale of it is hard to photograph badly — you’re standing in front of a 230-foot drop with jungle on all sides. When we get there early enough that it’s just us and the waterfall, it photographs like nowhere else I work.
The jungle wraps around you and tall trees create a green canopy overhead. The roar of the falls drowns out everything else. It’s just you two and this incredible natural wonder.
Easy Access and Simple Planning
Here’s the best part about choosing La Fortuna: you don’t need to book some fancy resort package.
This waterfall sits in a public park. Anyone can visit. Just drive about 10 minutes from La Fortuna town and you’re there. The entrance fee is only about $20 USD per person.
The park takes care of everything. They have parking, clean bathrooms, lockers for your stuff, and even a snack bar at the top. You won’t be roughing it in the jungle.
It’s about 530 cement steps down to the waterfall. The same number back up. The steps are well-maintained but they’re still steps. You’ll want decent shoes and some basic fitness level.
Think of it like walking down and up a 15-story building. Totally doable, but you’ll feel it in your legs on the way up.
Practical Planning Info
Best Time for Your La Fortuna Waterfall Engagement
Timing is everything when you propose at La Fortuna Waterfall. Trust me on this one. This timing is the same if it is just a couple photo session, and not an engagement proposal.
Get there right when they open at 7 AM. You’ll have the waterfall almost to yourselves for about an hour. By 8 AM, the tour buses start rolling in.
If you’re not a morning person, try the last hour before closing around 4 or 5 PM. The crowds thin out and the light gets softer. It’s pretty romantic.
Dry season runs from December to April. You’ll get clear skies and great weather. Rainy season can be beautiful too. Sometimes the mist and occasional rainbow make it even more special. We just watch the weather and pick our moment.
Tips from Your Photographer
I’ve shot over 60 engagement proposals over the last two years. Here’s what I’ve learned.
Be the first people at the waterfall. I always plan our timing so we beat the crowds. Those early morning shots with nobody else around are the best ones I take at this location.
Bring water and snacks. Bug spray is your friend. Pack a swimsuit if you want to celebrate with a dip in the pool afterward. The water is refreshing after that hike.
Good shoes matter. The steps can get slippery from the mist. River shoes or hiking shoes work best.
I’ll scout the best spots while keeping you safe on those wet rocks. Sometimes we cross the river for amazing angles. We’ll play it safe and move around according to the water level.
When the big moment happens, the waterfall’s roar creates a bubble of privacy. Even if other people are around, you won’t hear them. Your engagement proposal at La Fortuna feels completely private.

The waterfall is about 10 minutes from downtown La Fortuna. Rent a car, grab a taxi, or join a local tour. The park has plenty of parking. Most couples flying in for a La Fortuna trip come through San José — about a 3.5 hour drive. From Liberia it’s closer to 2.5 hours.
It can be during peak hours. But at opening time or in the last hour before closing, it gets much quieter. We’ll pick the perfect time for your privacy.
Weather changes fast in Costa Rica. Light rain can add romance and create beautiful mist effects. If it’s pouring, we’ll adjust our timing during your trip.
Yes! The pool at the base is perfect for cooling off. Many couples jump in to celebrate. Bring swimsuits and towels if you’re up for it.
