How to Plan a Proposal at La Leona and Oropendola Waterfalls Costa Rica

A woman and a man wearing life vests wade through blue water in a rocky canyon at La Leona Waterfall. The woman holds onto a rope, smiling, as they move toward a narrow opening—perfect for an adventurous engagement proposal.

La Leona Waterfall is not a casual stop. Reaching it takes effort, and that is exactly what makes it special.

For couples who want something memorable instead of easy, it works very well.

Oropendola Waterfall sits nearby and pairs perfectly with the same day. Together they create an engagement proposal setting that feels active and real, not staged.

Why La Leona Works for Proposals

La Leona Waterfall sits near Rincon de la Vieja in Guanacaste. It’s just a 40 minute drive from Liberia International Airport.

You cannot visit without a guide, and the hike includes river crossings, narrow canyon sections, and uneven terrain. It takes time and energy to reach the waterfall.

The canyon walls, turquoise water, and narrow passages create a dramatic setting that feels very different from a beach.

Who wants to do this type of proposal

Two people jump off a rocky ledge into a creek surrounded by lush green trees, with sunlight filtering through the branches—an adventurous engagement proposal at La Leona Waterfall reflected in the shimmering water below.

This type of proposal works best for couples who enjoy adventure.

The hike involves water crossings and slippery rock, and you should expect to get wet along the way.

If you want something simple and quick, a beach proposal makes more sense.

If you want something active and unique, La Leona is a strong choice.

A Real Proposal at La Leona

REBECCA AND ARWIN

Arwin contacted me because he wanted to propose to his girlfriend Rebecca at La Leona Waterfall.

He told her he had booked a photographer for the tour, but he did not mention the proposal.

Since La Leona requires a guide, I reached out to my friend who is a guide there and explained the plan. Together we chose the Triangulo as the proposal location.

When they reached that section of the canyon, Arwin proposed.

Rebecca had no idea it was coming, and her reaction said everything.

After the proposal, we continued the hike to the waterfall and kept taking photos. That relaxed, happy energy that follows the moment carried through the rest of the tour.

Combining La Leona and Oropendola

After La Leona, we headed to Oropendola Waterfall near Rincon de la Vieja. It’s just a ten minute drive from La Leona.

Oropendola is much easier to access. From where you park it is just a 5 minute walk.

Planning Tips for Visiting Both

If you plan to visit both waterfalls, start with La Leona since it requires more energy.

Finish at Oropendola when you are already tired from the hike.

Wear shoes with strong grip and expect wet surfaces. Light clothing that dries quickly helps as well.

If you are planning a proposal, working with a guide who understands your plan makes the moment smoother.

Photography Notes

The Triangulo at La Leona works well for proposals because it is a beautiful spot and enough space for the moment to unfold naturally.

Afterward, the main waterfall offers adventure but it is hard to take photographs there because of the waterfall wind. After the waterfall there are plenty of places for photographs and spots to swim.

At Oropendola, the wide canyon creates a very different look. This contrast helps the full story feel complete.

Good shoes matter. The steps can get slippery from the mist. River shoes or hiking shoes work best.

Move slowly near wet rocks. The surface can be slick, especially after rain.

I’ll scout the best spots while keeping you safe on those wet rocks. Sometimes we cross the river for amazing angles. We’ll play it safe and move around according to the water level.

Bonus Stop: Pozas del Cañon Costa Rica

On the way back, we stopped at Pozas del Cañon near Rincon de la Vieja.

Pozas del Cañon features calm swimming holes and smooth canyon walls that provide a quieter setting after the larger waterfalls. It’s a free, locals spot.

For couples visiting La Leona Waterfall and Oropendola Waterfall, Pozas del Cañon makes a natural final stop. It adds another beautiful location without adding much effort.

Final Thoughts

La Leona and Oropendola create a strong combination for a proposal day.

La Leona brings adventure and privacy.
Oropendola adds ease and dramatic scenery.
Pozas del Cañon finishes the day with calm water and a relaxed setting.

For couples who want something beyond a beach proposal, this route works very well.
